Learning & Teaching

OVERVIEW

At St Patrick’s we believe that the best teaching practice is to ‘teach without telling’. Our learning and teaching philosophy is based on developing inquiring minds where our students, along with staff, are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions, sort information, discover answers, on any given topic, and to take action and do something with the new information gathered. At St Patrick’s we are committed to supporting all students to become successful learners, confident individuals and active and informed citizens as stated in the Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals for Young Australians – www.mceetya.edu.au.

At St Patrick’s we are committed to developing successful learners by:
  • Providing a safe and healthy school environment that takes into consideration the needs of all students.
  • Developing each student’s capacity to be independent learners and task focused
  • Developing literacy and numeracy skills that are a foundation for success in all learning areas
  • Teaching our students the social skills, thinking skills, self-management skills and information skills they need to be successful learners
  • Designing units of work that allow for student voice
  • Allowing students to work collaboratively and/or individually, as well as in small group and whole class settings
  • Creating environments that encourage and allow students to work alone or with others
  • Building a body of learners that are able to source out relevant information, to be skilled in validating information, to clarify issues and be critical of their findings
  • Creating environments and communities of learners that are willing to contribute and able to appreciate the ideas of others
  • Establishing collaborative group work that encourages students to talk, comment, compare, negotiate, hypothesise, and problem solve

CEM - Horizons of Hope

Horizons of Hope

Horizons of Hope, the new education framework for the Archdiocese of Melbourne will support Catholic school communities to engage in dialogue about the distinctive nature of learning and teaching, leading learning and enhancing Catholic identity in our schools. The framework’s underlying belief is that ‘Learning Brings Hope’.

The framework has four tiers: Vision, Context, Strategy and Practice which will provide the capacity to navigate the current landscape – to learn together, to work from evidence, to animate and support learners, and to lead in faith and transformation.

Horizons of Hope Vision provides a succinct statement which outlines our vision for learners in our Catholic Schools. The Horizons of Hope Context provides a mapping of the current educational landscape, drawing out the challenges and opportunities for learning and teaching in a Catholic context. Aligned to the Vision and Context of Horizons of Hope is the resource ‘Learning and Teaching in a Catholic school’ that looks at Deep Learning, Animated Learners and Powerful Teaching.

Victorian Curriculum

Victorian Curriculum F-10

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 sets out a single, coherent and comprehensive set of content descriptions and associated achievement standards to enable teachers to plan, monitor, assess and report on the learning achievement of every student.

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 incorporates and reflects much of the Australian Curriculum F–10, but differs in some important respects, most notably the representation of the curriculum as a continuum of learning and the structural design.

Victorian Government and Catholic schools are required to use the Victorian Curriculum F–10. At St Patrick’s the Victorian Curriculum is delivered and reported to over a two year cycle.

Curriculum Design

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 includes eight learning areas and four capabilities. The learning areas of the Arts, Humanities and Technologies include distinct disciplines. The capabilities represent sets of knowledge and skills that are developed and applied across the curriculum.

Learning Areas and Capabilities

The Victorian Curriculum F–10 includes both knowledge and skills. These are defined by learning areas and capabilities. This curriculum design assumes that knowledge and skills are transferrable across the curriculum and therefore are not duplicated. For example, where skills and knowledge such as asking questions, evaluating evidence and drawing conclusions are defined in Critical and Creative Thinking, these are not duplicated in other learning areas such as History or Health and Physical Education. It is expected that the skills and knowledge defined in the capabilities will be developed, practised, deployed and demonstrated by students in and through their learning across the curriculum.

The design of the Victorian Curriculum F–10 is set out below:

  • The Arts
    • Dance

Assessment and Reporting

Assessment and Reporting at St Patrick’s
Assessment

Teachers at St Patrick’s continuously monitor and assess students’ progress against the learning standards of the Victorian Curriculum. Assessment of student learning is spread across the year following the school-wide Assessment Schedule. We believe that tracking student growth across the year and through the years provides us with an increased ability to build each student’s learning narrative. Our assessment schedule is a mix of specific standardised literacy and numeracy assessments and teacher designed assessments.

Other ongoing assessments include observations, samples of work, pre and post assessments for a learning sequence, and student self-reflections, make up the body of evidence teachers use to track student learning.

Teachers provide students with regular feedback in order that each student knows how he or she is going and their next step. The sense of continual growth is important for children to know why and how they are being challenged and to celebrate their successes.

Reporting

Student reports are prepared and sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4. These reports indicate to students and parents how the child is progressing against the Victorian standards. The report is accompanied by the student’s Assessment Portfolio.

Interviews

Parent teacher interviews are held early in Term 1 and at the end of Term 2 – parents, teachers and students meet to identify individual needs. Parents can request a meeting at any time throughout the year to discuss specific issues of their child’s learning.

National Testing Program (NAPLAN)

Students in Years 3 and 5 undertake the National Literacy and Mathematics tests in May of each year. A comprehensive report is sent home to each parent in August, which provides parents with further indication of how their students are progressing compared with children across the nation.

Digital Technologies

Acceptable User Agreements at St Patrick’s

Students at St Patrick’s are exposed to a range of digital resources which include, desktops, laptops, chromebooks, and iPads. At St Patrick’s we believe in the importance of educating students to be safe and responsible users of Digital Technologies in an online environment. At the start of every year, students and parents are required to read and sign an ‘Acceptable User Agreement’ so students are fully aware of their rights and responsibilities when using digital resources at school.
